Paterson, NJ – This past Thursday, January 23, at 6:00 p.m., Panchito’s Restaurant was the setting for a historic event in District 35. Steven Fulop, Mayor of Jersey City and candidate for Governor of New Jersey, joined Romi Herrera, the first Peruvian, to announce Herrera’s candidacy as he aims to become the only Latino running for the District 35 seat in the State Assembly.

Herrera, who made history as the first Latino councilman of the municipality of Garfield during his term from 2020 to 2024, is now running for the State Assembly seat under the Democratic Party in a district where 52% of the population is Hispanic. His candidacy seeks to give a voice to a community that has historically been underrepresented in state politics.

“I am proud to be part of this movement to amplify the voices of our Hispanic community in New Jersey,” Herrera expressed during the gathering. “This district deserves authentic representation that fights for our priorities: quality education for our children, economic opportunities, and a political system that reflects our diversity in District 35.”

Herrera is a Peruvian immigrant and an advocate for immigrant rights, fighting for equal opportunities for all Garfield residents. His work within the Democratic committee and as a public servant has allowed him to have a positive impact on the community and work toward building a more inclusive and equitable future for all district residents. His commitment and dedication to his community are clear examples of his hard work and passion for making District 35 a better place for everyone.

The event attracted community leaders, residents, and supporters, who expressed their support for the candidates and emphasized the importance of more inclusive representation in Trenton.
